Custom vs. Out-of-the-Box: The Real Choice Behind Pharma Digital Transformation

Pharma remains one of the most regulated and challenging industries — and digital transformation here requires a very specific approach.
Based on our experience, we typically see two types of companies:
1. Companies that choose out-of-the-box solutions
They want configurable applications aligned with industry standards. Such systems usually dictate their own business logic — which works for some pharmaceutical processes.
2. Companies that require solutions tailored to their internal processes
These organizations have already implemented standards like GMP, GxP, and FDA requirements, and aim to digitize their operations strictly in line with these frameworks.
This was precisely the scenario in one of my recent projects with a global pharmaceutical manufacturer.
Our goal was full-scale automation of core manufacturing processes, including:
- Production dossier generation
- Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) and quality management
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and laboratory process management
- End-to-end traceability
- Regulatory compliance (GMP, GxP, international standards)
- Integration with lab equipment & IoT sensors
- Visualization, forecasting and automated reporting
Additionally, the company prioritized:
- Strong ROI and optimized TCO
- Ease of use and quick adaptation to process changes
- Ability for employees to configure the system without developers
- Comprehensive training for both usage and configuration
- Unified processes across branches, multi-country localization, and centralized reporting
This project set a high bar — and in the next articles, I'll share how our team delivered on these ambitious goals.
